Aug. 22, 2011 - This evening at the home of Brenda & Bill Thexton in
east Wolfville along Main St., a juvenile downy woodpecker with a red
cap (top of head) was going after de-shelled peanuts in one feeder,
and the tray with millet seed attracted a juvenile n. cardinal, which
has been seen often for at least the past half-week -- the young
cardinal is very fully fledged and feathered out and probably
independent now of its parents, with a blackish beak, and we think it
is a young male on account of the extensive reddish colour showing on
its breast and parts of its flanks and belly.

Regarding the juvenile downy and hairy woodpeckers, the various field
guides are confusing, but I think for both species that both male and
female juveniles can have red or orange caps (but perhaps they are
variable and not always present?). Sibley's field guide shows red
caps on juveniles of both species, but the sex is not mentioned.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
