This is a multipart message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_qIDprEehIuJiNV9slJoYrg) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT To: All From: John Sollows Date: July 28/11 Can we all agree that honest science (a) considers all possibilities without bias, (b) realizes that qualitative information can be as important as (and sometimes more important than) quantitative data, and (c) does not confuse absence of evidence for a phenomenon or an effect with absence of the phenomenon/effect, but (d) acknowledges the need to test for alleged phenomena/effects, if their importance warrants it? In the case of the effects of large-scale cage culture of carnivorous fish on ecosystems, I would bet that a bit of digging into the literature of various sorts would raise serious concerns about the wisdom of promoting this sort of thing. Politicians need to understand that long-term economic issues and environmental issues coincide. It's some short-term economic issues that conflict with them, and the long-term costs of promoting such short-term economic fixes often exceed the benefits. --Boundary_(ID_qIDprEehIuJiNV9slJoYrg) Content-type: text/html; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:v=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" = xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" = xmlns:w=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" = xmlns:m=3D"http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2004/12/omml" = xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40">
<meta = http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Dus-ascii"><meta name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 14 = (filtered medium)">
<body lang=3DEN-CA link=3Dblue = vlink=3Dpurple>

To: = All

<p = class=3DMsoNormal>From: John Sollows
<p = class=3DMsoNormal>

Date: July = 28/11

<p = class=3DMsoNormal>Can we all agree that honest science
<p = class=3DMsoNormal>(a) considers all possibilities without bias, =

(b) realizes that qualitative = information can be as important as (and sometimes more important than) = quantitative data, and

(c) does not = confuse absence of evidence for a phenomenon or an effect with absence = of the phenomenon/effect, but

(d) = acknowledges the need to test for alleged phenomena/effects, if their = importance warrants it?
<p = class=3DMsoNormal>

In the case = of the effects of large-scale cage culture of carnivorous fish on = ecosystems, I would bet that a bit of digging into the literature of = various sorts would raise serious concerns about the wisdom of promoting = this sort of thing.
<p = class=3DMsoNormal>

Politicians = need to understand that long-term economic issues and environmental = issues coincide.
