Just to add a tidbit to Chris Majka below: Chris mentioned that it
isn't known whether extralimital cougars are parts of small but self-
sustaining populations, or are wanderers from afar (apparently like
the one from South Dakota going to Connecticut); but we should add
another possibility, i.e., escapees from captivity. As I understand
it, the various wildlife agencies in the States and in Canada do not
have much of a handle on how many captive cougars (and lions, tigers,
leopards, etc.) exist and in which jurisdictions (except for zoos and
wildlife parks) -- there seem to be few to no regulations on the
reporting of such animals and their non-wild movements and their
escapes in the wild. Cheers? from Jim in Wolfville.
