Where wolverines occur naturally, they are hardly ever reported as
sightings, I believe.

I consider myself very fortunate to have actually seen two
wolverines, both of them in Banff National Park in Alberta, in 1975,
when I was out in the field every day gathering biophysical data on
birds and herptiles for the Parks Service for a fabulous summer job,
just before I came to Nova Scotia.

One of the sightings was extremely fleeting with just enough seen to
know what it was, in the forest. But the other sighting was
unbelievable and extremely unlikely, as I was driving along one of
the park's paved roads near Lake Louise, I believe; the wolverine
walked or slowly trotted out of the woods down the slope to the
roadside and spent a few precious seconds hesitating there and
contemplating where it was and what to do next. It was a typical
national park animal and appeared to have no fear as I stopped my car
and gawked at it from fairly close range. Then it slowly moved away
and back into the forest and disappeared. I was so awestruck or just
stupid that I never even thought of my camera that was probably right
there with me!

Anyway, I think Randy's guess about a possible fisher is perhaps very
astute, although fishers too are very seldom observed by anyone and
are pretty rare.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
