Hi Randy & All, July 8, 2011
Some years ago I found a paper tube, obviously made by some wasp/hornet/yellowjacket type insect, that was about 8.5 cm long with diameter varying from 17 mm to 8 mm. It was on the lawn near a bank that in several recent years had a yellow jacket nest below ground so might have served to increase ventilation (The tube has been gathering dust on my desk since then so the above measurements are not based on memory.)

In the various posts about moving wasp nests I wonder if these are variously paper wasp nests (open, single layered & umbilicate), Yellow Jacket nests (closed, multilayered and encased in numerous paper sheaths) of Black Wasp nests (don't know).

Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville

  All,

In my decades in the woods, I've never come across a (presumed) wasp nest like the one in the pictures I posted on the FB page. I saw no activity, but being allergic to some wasp stings, I didn't entice the residents out, either.

I'm still a FB novice (and I'm very fine with that), but maybe this link will get you there: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nature-Nova-Scotia/183810795000696

Anyone have any idea on what this is?

  Randy
