Made a quick visit to the hardwoods land Saturday, June 11th. It was windy
so woodsy birds were hunkering low. Came across a small bird in the middle
of the dirt road and almost hit it. It was a chick so I managed to note
its field marks. The next thing, I spotted another chick... The chicks
were not yet feathered but mobile.

Could not think what they were. Eliminated ducks (feet, not webbed), song
birds (too big), rails (feet not long), grouses/ pheasants (beak pointy,
not pigeon-like), etc... Noticed its top was solid, dull brown, not striped
and heavy eyeline. The chicks were scurrying to the ditch, one to the left
and the other to the right! Maybe splitting up the family?

After some investigations in Internet, they turned out to be American
woodcock chicks! My first in more than ten years. It would have been nice
to see an adult.

Cheers,
Liz
