All:

Daughter Mary reports a Red-eyed Vireo nest built unwisely low in her
Halifax backyard lilac, and apparently abandoned. We used to have
several breeding Red-eyeds in my part of Halifax, but no more - I
blame cats and increases in crows and jays (hold those black sunflower
seeds?). This vireo has increased on BBS counts, but have others noted
declines in urban areas?

Yesterday, colleagues and I found a fledgling (beyond branchling)
Great Horned Owl at Hartlen Pt.; an adult was watching from a
distance, but did nothing to disrupt our gaze (and photos).

Later we watched a subadult (3d-cycle?) Bald Eagle repeatedly stooping
at a crèche of Common Eiders, forcing the still fluffy ducklings to
dive to exhaustion. Finally it grabbed one and consumed it on shore -
a tiny morsel at best, more suited as a meal for the crows that
gathered around the "feasting" eagle.

Cheers, Ian

Ian McLaren
