--Boundary_(ID_vQPgpR2xl4lSs3Suw/dCMw) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT MAY 31, 2011 - This evening I walked the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens at the K.C. Irving Centre in Wolfville. Every Tuesday KCIC offers a walk at 6:30 p.m. in the Gardens and Woodland Trails, and this was the third one this year. Only Nancy Nickerson joined me, and there were only 3 people last week. The KCIC has no paid seasonal staff this year, so the walks so far are without leaders. Also KCIC wants to compile notes on the biodiversity observed each week, obviously a voluntary proposition. Everyone should also know that KCIC offers tours of the facility on request, and I am one of the many volunteer leaders for tours. The two most knowledgeable people at KCIC for the Gardens & Trails are Melanie Priesnitz, Chief Horticulturist or some such title, and Peter Romkey, Director of KCIC. Tonight's notes start with a long list of plant species seen in flower: bunchberry, wild lily-of-the-valley, foxberry, lowbush blueberry, highbush blueberry, starflower, blue-bead lily or Clintonia, Canada anemone, choke cherry, garden lupine, tall buttercup, other buttercup species?, cuckoo-flower, wild strawberry, yellow lady's-slipper, pink lady's slipper or moccasin flower (1)(was in bloom last Tuesday too, says NN), false Solomon's seal, forget-me-not sp.? (both blue and white flowers), cow lily or yellow pond lily, three-toothed cinquefoil (just a couple in bloom), red osier dogwood (lots), blue- eyed grass (not a grass but an iris relative), harebell (one with open flower), pussytoes, blue violet sp., marsh marigold, chokeberry (one tall species in sand barren habitat, shorter species? abundant in bog), rhodora (nearly finished blooming), Labrador tea, bog laurel, mountain ash, unidentified grass spp., wild calla (in pond with cow lilies & cattails), roseroot, Japonica? or quince? (single conspicuous shrub in bloom in forested area), shrubby cinquefoil (both yellow and white flowers). Species almost in flower (i.e., with flower-buds): bayberry, yarrow, wild raisin, highbush cranberry (leaves still intact, uneaten by beetles (will happen later)), sheep sorrel, sheep laurel or lambkill, English hawthorn. Species with young fruits: cotton grass (a sedge), shadbush/Juneberry, sweet fern (not a fern), common dandelion (ripe fruits), trailing arbutus or Mayflower (Epigaea repens), willow (at least 2 species shedding "cotton"), red- berried baneberry, purple avens, sweet gale, leatherleaf, buffaloberry. Fern species noted: maidenhair fern, Christmas fern, cinnamon fern (almost ready to shed spores), interrupted fern (close to same as cinnamon fern), royal fern, bracken fern, marginal fern, sensitive fern, ostrich or fiddlehead fern, hay-scented fern. Horsetail species: only field horsetail noted. Other nature: Nancy told me that a week ago she & Harold Forsyth & Martin Thomas discovered an active pileated woodpecker nest (with audible nestlings?) just across the path from the Century (Red) Oak along the Woodland Trail; Am. crow, Scotch? pine with both male cones shedding pollen and very young red-coloured female cones quite close on the same small tree (and receptive to pollen from the same tree??) (then the pine seeds take two years to grow before shedding), a basking large dragonfly (twelve-spot?), and a large anthill with smallish blackish ants. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville Jim (James W.)
