I want to thank everyone who came out to the NS Bird Society me= eting and presentations at Temperance Street School in New Glasgow this = past Saturday=2E Ken McKenna and Karen Potter both gave very interesting= talks on Chimney Swift biology and the importance of the school for swi= fts=2E =3E =3E = =3E =3E As Ken said=2C around 80 people attended the presentations and a= fterward we were treated to a spectacular show as over 270 chattering sw= ifts entered the chimney=2E I took a video that I=92ll post to YouTube t= onight=2E If anyone else has video or photos that you=92d like to share=2C= we=92d love to see them! Photos of roost sites=2C chimneys=2C flying sw= ifts=2C people taking part in swift watches=2C etc=2E are all welcome=2E= Please send to marswifts=40birdscanada=2Eorg or post a link to your we= bsite where they can be viewed=2E =3E =3E = =3E =3E Last night Julie Paquet=2C Becky Whittam and I did our first of = 6 roost watches at the old foundry chimney in Oxford=2E This is quite a = neat site=3A a massive free-standing chimney smack dab in the middle of = someone=92s back yard (although I think the Town of Oxford actually owns= the chimney)=2E The owner of the house beside the chimney has always be= en fond of her chattering =91neighbours=92 and is hoping they will conti= nue to use this site=2E We counted 6 swifts flying around the chimney w= hen we arrived at 8=3A30=2C but only 3 actually entered ( at 9=3A00)=2E = After about 5 minutes=2C one came back out=2C bringing our total down to= 2=2E We=92re really curious about where those other 4 swifts roosted fo= r the evening! The homeowner also mentioned that many more swifts (at l= east 100) used this chimney before she lived at the house=2C but the chi= mney was used once to burn trash and the swifts stopped roosting there f= or a while=2E =3E =3E = =3E =3E As a side note=2C we also had bats fluttering around our heads=2C= which were easy to tell apart from the swifts=2E We heard one Common Ni= ghthawk =93booming=94- the first one for me this year=2E =3E =3E = =3E =3E I=92m looking forward to the next time I can visit Oxford and do= some scouting around for potential sites=2E In the meantime=2C I
