I wa= nt to thank everyone who came out to the NS Bird Society meeting and presen= tations at Temperance Street School in New Glasgow this past Saturday. Ken = McKenna and Karen Potter both gave very interesting talks on Chimney Swift = biology and the importance of the school for swifts. As Ken said, around 80 people attended the presentations and afterward we w= ere treated to a spectacular show as over 270 chattering swifts entered the= chimney. I took a video that I'll post to YouTube tonight. If anyone else = has video or photos that you'd like to share, we'd love to see them! Photos= of roost sites, chimneys, flying swifts, people taking part in swift watch= es, etc. are all welcome. Please send to marswifts@birdscanada.org<mailto:= marswifts@birdscanada.org> or post a link to your website where they can b= e viewed. Last night Julie Paquet, Becky Whittam and I did our first of 6 roost watch= es at the old foundry chimney in Oxford. This is quite a neat site: a massi= ve free-standing chimney smack dab in the middle of someone's back yard (al= though I think the Town of Oxford actually owns the chimney). The owner of = the house beside the chimney has always been fond of her chattering 'neighb= ours' and is hoping they will continue to use this site. We counted 6 swif= ts flying around the chimney when we arrived at 8:30, but only 3 actually e= ntered ( at 9:00). After about 5 minutes, one came back out, bringing our t= otal down to 2. We're really curious about where those other 4 swifts roost= ed for the evening! The homeowner also mentioned that many more swifts (at= least 100) used this chimney before she lived at the house, but the chimne= y was used once to burn trash and the swifts stopped roosting there for a w= hile. As a side note, we also had bats fluttering around our heads, which were ea= sy to tell apart from the swifts. We heard one Common Nighthawk "booming"- = the first one for me this year. I'm looking forward to the next time I can visit Oxford and do some scoutin= g around for potential sites. In the meantime, I encourage anyone who lives= in the area to keep watching and listening for flying cigars!
