--Boundary_(ID_kNN491xT9s1EzEXXob2ULA) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT MAY 27, 2011 - Tonight the penultimate short item on CBC Radio's "As It Happens" (www.cbc.ca/aih/ )was an interview with a woman from St. Louis, Missouri, about the current outbreak there of adult periodical cicadas of the 13-year and/or 17-year species. In the background during the interview were the audible calls of the cicadas. (As far as I know, cicadas in Nova Scotia are all so-called "annual or dog-day cicadas" (vs. periodical) and have life cycles that last 2 to 5 years, i.e., the larva/nymph spends that much time underground before emergence and transformation/molting into adult form, which then ascends a tree and lays eggs and then dies after a couple of weeks.)(The periodical cicadas, on the other hand, have life-cycle lengths that are prime numbers, so that predators find it very difficult to synchronize with them, and these cicadas have mass emergence timed so that most emerge over a very short time and are everywhere and call constantly all day long, in late Spring -- our annual cicadas emerge during the dog-days of mid to late Summer.) When I was young in the Chicago suburbs, I witnessed one mass emergence of the periodical cicadas, and it was very impressive. Look them up on the Internet/Wikipedia etc. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville --Boundary_(ID_kNN491xT9s1EzEXXob2ULA) Content-type: text/html; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable
<body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><font = face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"5" style=3D"font: 20.0px Helvetica">MAY = 27, 2011 - <span class=3D"Apple-style-span" = style=3D"font-size: 20px; ">Tonight the penultimate short item on CBC = Radio's "As It Happens" (<a = href=3D"http://www.cbc.ca/aih/">www.cbc.ca/aih/ )was an = interview with a woman from St. Louis, Missouri, about the = current outbreak there of adult periodical cicadas of the 13-year = and/or 17-year species.
