Shawn, these jellyfish are almost certainly Moon Jellyfish, Aurelia
aurita?, which is one of our two species of common Scyphozoan
jellyfish in the North Atlantic. Moon Jellyfish do not sting us, but
they have stinging cells for capturing very small prey like copepod
crustaceans, fish larvae, planktonic worms, etc. Our other
Scyphozoan jellyfish is the Lion's-Mane Jellyfish, Cyanea capillata?,
which has very long reddish tentacles, is a notorious bad stinger for
swimming humans and the jellyfish's prey animals, and reputedly can
get enormous in arctic waters.

Other kinds of jellyfishes occur in Nova Scotia, but most of them are
quite small and harmless and are Hydrozoans, which are extremely
common in the sessile colonial polyp stages in places like the
mudflats of the Minas Basin.

As an aside, the Nova Scotia Sea Turtle Network, based in Halifax,
has been surveying beaches for a few years for noticeable
jellyfishes, since they are prey themselves for more than one species
of endangered sea turtles, especially the huge leatherback sea turtles.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
