I think I got one fair shot which I gue= ss I'll stick ont the nature NS facebook site. Doesn't at all do it justic= e though. I = noticed a male Hairy Woodpecker excavating a new hole in an aspen/poplar. I= t was a fine site=2C up about 10 m & on the underside of a strong curve in = the main trunk. I took numerous photos as he worked. When he was in to the = greatest depth=2C I could still see his entire tail=2C both within & outsid= e of the hole. Today I was back for the first time. I saw a female Y-b Sapsucker right at = the entrance & then I saw a male enter=2C disappear=2C and proceed to make = excavation noises for many minutes from well within the tree. After lunch= =2C I returned & saw him do all of this a second time. I didn't note any Ha= iry Woodpeckers in the area. Scientifically=2C we only know one thing. A hole started by a Hairy is now = in the possession of a pair of Sapsuckers. Perhaps a Sharpie removed the Ha= iry. Perhaps his mate thought the hole had a rotten view. But to be honest= =2C I don't entirely trust the Sapsuckers. Has anyone ever seen something directly relevant in the woodpecker world ? = (Let's not get into Tree Swallows=2C Bluebirds=2C House Sparrows=2C Starlin= gs=2C etc. That story is known.)=20 --=20 Rick Whitman = --_423c4663-e205-4cb3-8b8e-c63076760394_ Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

<body class=3D'hmmessage'> Had an enormous and glorious male pileated in =3Bthe front yard at Ange= vine=2C Cumberland County =3B- very difficult to photograph - any tips?= - head was moving so quickly it was all a blur. =3B I think I got one&= nbsp=3Bfair shot which I guess I'll stick ont =3Bthe nature NS facebook= site. =3B Doesn't at all do it justice though.
Mary
=3B

Date: Wed=2C 18 May 2011 17:14:19 -0300
Subject: [NatureNS] Hairy Starts= It=2C Sapsuckers Finish It
From: dendroica.caerulescens@gmail.com
To= : naturens@chebucto.ns.ca

On April 25th I was back to Methals Dam=2C= Black River Lake=2C Kings Co.
