This is a reminder to list members about the do's and don'ts of quoting the media. In almost all cases it is illegal to quote a media article in full. That's because most media (newspapers magazines, websites) own copyright on published materials, and the rule is that to quote substantial parts of any given piece requires permission from the copyright holder. Under the right of "fair dealing," you can quote brief parts of an article -- enough to substantiate or illustrate a point you are making or to get people interested in reading the piece. The way to properly deal with this on an e-mail list is to supply a URL for the full article or to fully cite the source (Name of publication, byline, page no., date). If you do want to reproduce something in full, make sure that you have permission and include a statement of that fact in your post. Thanks for your consideration of the legal rights of others. Doug -- Doug Linzey Administrator, NatureNS e-mail list naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca
