We had a couple of indigoes down on the Wyman Road (near Yarmouth) one
April, six or seven years ago. One moulted over the time it was here, and
when I first saw it, my first reaction was that it was a strangely-mottled,
overly small junco! A little thinking told me what it really was!

I'm looking at Stokes and comparing their images and descriptions
I'm leaning away from a grosbeak bc:
- lack of reddish brown wing bars
-hard to tell, but I do not see black around the bill
I'm leaning towards indigo bunting bc:
- the blacker wings
-similiar mottling of color on breast ( immature 1st spring male )
Bigger than the goldfinch that are around the feeders, much smaller than the
blue jays, robins, female pheasant, squirrel, song sparrows, red wing
blackbirds that are hanging around this am.
If anyone wants to hang out in the yard or send me thoughts and features to
check for, I"d love to hear from you.

Angela, How I see them is:
Indigo bunting is smaller and rounder, something like a junco and a blue
gros beak is shaped more like a purple finch to my way of thinking. I've had
them both but not this year. Although there is irredecence to both blues,
the gros beak seems a slight bit bluer where the bunting is deeper. Either
are good birds to my way of thinking!! Hope this helps a wee bit.
