Hi Jim & All, Apr 21, 2011

This kind of knee-jerk reaction (stop spreading the disease, people) =
is so typical of officialdom it would be funny if it were not so sad.=20

Let's see-- say >20,000 bats per cave, they can fly and probably =
don't wash hands ,face or boots before entering or after leaving caves.=20

Roughly 1 in 100,000 people go to bat caves each year (an order of =
magnitude guess), they can't fly and probably do wash before entering =
and after leaving.=20

And bats hang cheek to jowl over their dung heap in air that is =
likely about 100% RH.
So considering both opportunity, and condition; is the bat vector for =
spread of this disease 10^6 or 10^8 times as large as the human vector ? =

White-nose fungus disease has now been found in Nova Scotia (and =
earlier in N.B. too). This was also on CBC Radio News this morning. =

The Nova Scotia government wants people to stay out of caves and old =
mine works that might house bats to try to stop the spread of a disease =
that=EF=BF=BDs lethal to the province=EF=BF=BDs little brown bat =
population.
Wildlife officials are expressing concern about the discovery of the =
disease in the bats.
Nova Scotia is the fourth province to confirm cases of white-nose =
syndrome, a fungus that leaves a white ring around a bat=EF=BF=BDs nose, =
ears or wings.
Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker says staying out of caves =
and old mines limits the chances of cross-contamination.
The disease poses no risk to humans and was also discovered in New =
Brunswick last month.
Insect-eating bats help to control pests, including the spruce =
budworm, that are destructive to forests and agricultural crops.
