All: In a flock of some 20 Com. Eiders off E. Passage, HRM, this morning, there were two rather palish females that came close enough to suggest, from their pointed frontal processes (long extensions of the bill up the sides of the forecrown - wide and rounded in our local dresseri) that they were of the northern (n. QC, Nunavut) subspecies borealis. These should appear here in winter, but I haven't seen them for some years. I couldn't make out the pertinent characteristics of others in the flock and took photos in bad light - but not good enough. Cheers, Ian Ian McLaren
