--Boundary_(ID_mcZnbLRG9QEM5jXELa0FDg) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT MARCH 10, 2011 - Yesterday Richard Stern found the/a sandhill crane just north of Van Nostrand's Pond at Starr's Point, in corn stubble fields. Today I couldn't find it there, but Bernard & Sandra Forsythe were also searching when I left. I found out later that Bernard found the crane a bit later in a big cornfield toward Prescott House from V. N. Pond, east of McGee Road. Since it's time for the bald eagles to be starting to nest, I drove around to several local eagle nest-sites to check for occupancy (see below). Any eagles on nests now might be in "pseudo-incubation" (see Stokes' series of field guides to bird behavior), and without climbing to nests or flying over them it is impossible to know when the egg-laying starts (also nest-cameras may help, like Randall Bishop's set-up north of Noggins Corner Farm Market at Greenwich (nest visible from Hwy. 1 just west of the market). - Eye Road, just e. of Wolfville: both adult eagles were on/in nest, one sitting in incubation position and the other standing on/in nest; - North Grand Pre (Long Island) campground nest: no eagles on or near nest. - Grand Pre dykelands: 4 eagles seen flying, including 2 adults in which one was clearly chasing the other one, probably in an aggressive territorial chase? - at Hortonville, I searched again in vain for the nearly-all-white red-tailed hawk at the Kenny farm, but did see two normally-coloured ones there (one on a power line twice); - north of Noggins Corner Farm Market: one adult eagle in nest in incubation position; - Starr's Point (Chris Cox's farm); two adult eagles standing together in/on nest; - at raven nest on metal grain elevator on Chris Cox's farm, less than half of nest remains, and one adult was standing on top of the elevator; - at Wellington Dyke (lowermost Canard River dyke), a very impressive assemblage of about 900 Canada geese (Bernard Forsythe guessed 1000) was feeding on the dykeland adjacent to the seaward dyke; - Canard Road eagle nest (e. & s. of Jawbone Corner): one eagle in nest in incubation position, but very difficult to see (just top of head); - in Canning, just west of Wilma Gibson's home, in the top of a tall pine and difficult to see, there is a new raven nest (and Glenys Gibson tells me it has a raven on it, but even the nest is hard to see in the dense foliage)(last year's nest just to the west is no longer there, but they have a much better tree for it now); - eagle nest to the south from Stirling's Farm Market in Greenwich (distant, across field, view from area of greenhouse behind market): no white eagle head visible when I looked in mid-afternoon.
