Ralph arrives safely at sanctuary
Pelican at new digs in North Carolina
By PAT LEE Staff Reporter
Wed=2C Mar 9=2C 2011=20
Ralph the pelican=2C blown off course in Halifax last year=2C is nearly at =
his destination in North Carolina=2C a wildlife centre where he will hopefu=
lly be released into the wild. (INGRID BULMER / Staff)

Ralph the pelican has landed.
After being on the road for three days=2C the bird=2C who had inadvertently=
ended up in Nova Scotia last fall=2C was successfully delivered Wednesday =
to a refuge in North Carolina.
Hope Swinimer of the Hope for Wildlife Society in Seaforth=2C Ralph=92s hom=
e since September=2C said by phone Wednesday that the bird had made it to O=
uter Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Newport=2C N.C.
But she said there's one final twist to Ralph's story. It turns out he is a=
 she.
Swinimer=2C who rescued the brown pelican in Dartmouth after she was blown =
off course during hurricane Earl=2C said staff at the North Carolina centre=
knew right away that Ralph was a girl because of the size of the beak.
"It's Ralphina now=2C" she said=2C laughing.
Earlier in the day=2C before knowing about the sex change=2C Swinimer said =
the bird had done well during the road trip.
"Ralph is doing great. He=92s looking really good." =
