Hi All,
=A0
Due to some computer glitches, I was not able to report an interesting sigh=
ting that occurred several weeks ago on Creighton Park Rd, here in Dartmout=
h as I was out for a walk with my Springer, 'Dash'.
As I walked under a large tree, I caught a glimpse of something moving in t=
he branches. Glancing up I was totally surprised to see a Northern Saw Whet=
Owl staring down. First time I have ever seen one! Unfortunately, at almos=
t the same time,=A0a loose dog, intent on causing trouble,=A0took a run at =
my dog, creating abit of a kerfuffle, causing the little owl to take flight=
. As for the dog, it was easily distracted by me throwing some dog treats i=
n the opposite direction & it's owner calling it back.
The Red Squirrels are having lots of chase games going=A0on. '''Tis the sea=
son', I guess! =A0Interestingly, I observed an unusual occurrence during on=
e of these chase episodes. As one chased the other far=A0up a very large tr=
ee at Grahams Grove and further out onto the branches, one=A0lost its footi=
ng and fell quite a distance,=A0hard onto an icy area right in front of me =
& 'Dash'. It seemed momentarily stunned, then=A0gave a very loud squeak, to=
ok off again with the other one right behind it. Ran up another tree, fell =
out of it and ran into a hole by a tree.=20
It has been very quiet at my backyard feeders. A few Chickadees, Song Sparr=
ows, the occasional Mourning Dove, incredibly not a single Starling! =A0Hav=
e not seen the Sharp-shinned Hawk either.=A0Has been reported, though, that=
the female pheasant that has been seen frequently in the green belt that s=
eparates Celtic Ave. and Glenwood Ave for the past several months is doing =
well and visiting=A0other neighbours feeders.
