If = you'd like to have it, I can also place it in the same bag as the Owl. = I'll drop it off next time I'm in Antigonish. =20 Tom K Canso ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Randy Lauff=20 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca=20 Sent: Tuesday, March 01, 2011 6:45 AM Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Saw-whet Owl (dead) The birds can handle harsh, but the access to food is critical. Unlike = weasels, which seem abundant this year, owls can't hunt under the snow = (not deep snow). The Great Grey is a specialist at deep snow plunging, = but most owls can't go that deep, and we don't have that nice soft snow = out here anyway. The current state of knowledge on over-wintering Saw-whets is that = it's only the adult males which do so. Migration is dominated by hatch = year birds and there is a paucity of adult males caught at migration = stations. I'd like to see all winter-killed birds, if logistically possible.
