FEB. 24, 2011 - I checked the downtown Wolfville small-tree fruits
that the Bohemian waxwings were eating yesterday, and are on dangling
pedicels several cm. long and probably from individual dense flowers
-- the fruits are soft inside with pinkish-orange flesh, probably
some kind of planted ornamental cherry?

Once again, and probably my last check, I looked for the nearly-all-
white red-tailed hawk at Hortonville on the Kenny farm, se. of Just
Us! Coffee Roastery and Cafe. No sign of it, but I did see, as usual
this year, a normally pigmented red-tailed hawk there.

The very white individual spent at least nine winters in that area
faithfully, but we never knew where it went in summer, nor whether it
ever got a chance to spread its genes to any offspring. Presumably
it somehow met its demise, but we don't really know that either.

I also drove around north of Grand Pre, but I didn't see anything
remarkable on this glorious, Sunny, warm day with light wind -- just
the 2 red-tailed hawks that are usually along the power poles on the
north-south paved road, plus 2 pheasants on Long Island.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
