Correct if I m wrong but is it Fred Scott who has done a lot of research on the NS cougar based on sightings etc ? Perhaps the pop is increasing and thus like coyotes are becoming more brazen and closer to residences etc. Wow 2 in the backyard - could it be an adult and youngster - how long do young stay with a say a mother ?? It may be a naive of me - but - wishful thinking that most people would surely recognize the difference between a "house" cat and a "cougar" ? ? ? To quote a quote " How we can we protect that which we do not know" DB From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Randy Lauff Sent: February-09-11 1:25 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Eastern Cougar I am thinking that "proof", not just "evidence" is needed for DNR to state, "We have cougars in NS." They clearly cannot say "We don't have cougars in NS", so them not making a commitment is perfectly understandable. I think I remember one statement something along the lines of, 'We accept that there may be cougars in NS.' What else do we expect them to say, given lack of proof? Surely some DNR people have had sightings, too, since random people do. Why do you-all think DNR would be so reluctant to espouse the idea of cougars in NS? Is their reluctance a good thing, since we don't want the kind of hysteria that is surrounding coyotes?
