The number of birds at the open water of Three Mile Lake just keeps increasing
as everything else freezes. Yesterday there were 53 black ducks, five mallards,
a mallard x black duck hybrid and another hybrid mallard that wasn't obviously
crossed with black duck, though it easily could have been. A second drake hooded
merganser has joined the first at this location.

There was also a flock of about 25 black ducks and one mallard x black duck
hybrid at Sucker Brook Road.

No cardinal at Shirley Lane, though all the previously mentioned birds (tree,
white-throated and song sparrows, etc) were all there, as was a mixed flock of
starlings and red-winged blackbirds. They took off before I got a good look, but
I would say there were about ten blackbirds in the mix. Perhaps the same flock
Lois reported a little while ago? I didn't spot any cowbirds, though my glimpse
was pretty brief.
