and quit This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary_(ID_Cdy9QQ99n3eqj60blsS3cA) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT In response to Jim's request for impressions of the Eagle Watch last weekend, here are a few thoughts. I found Jim's earlier reports helpful to me for finding my way for the Eagle Watch. I attended on Sunday, arriving at the Swetnam field site (where Middle Dyke Road meets Bains Road) near 8:30am and departed after 2:30pm. There was certainly a large crowd. From a photographic perspective the 'action' mostly happened in three separate periods, with the main event happening near 1:30pm. Based on the reports of what happened on Saturday, I had almost packed up and departed with the intention of returning in a couple of hours. Lucky for me, the Eagles sprung into action and I was able to witness and photograph some of the activity. Any later, as I was literally on my way to the car, and I would have missed it! I enjoyed watching the Red-Tailed Hawks, but a good in-flight picture of one eluded me. In another email, Jim suggested bringing a folding chair. This is certainly a very good idea as waiting for an extended period may be required. As others have suggested, the Eagle's patience before deciding it was time to eat seems to be an indication that it has been a good winter for them so far. Dressing warmly (with heavy boots as standing on the cold ground did chill my feet), a snack, and something warm to drink in a thermos will also increase comfort. Chatting with neighbours along the 'paparazzi line' was enjoyable and certainly helped pass the time. It was nice meeting some of the visitors from Quebec who were curious about other areas of the province for birding and nature photography for future visits. Finally, thank you to Richard Stern and George Koszucki for organizing the presentation that happened on Tuesday evening by professional photographer Scott Linstead. A few of my photographs can be found here: http://paulevans.smugmug.com/Other/Eagle-Watch-2011/ Paul Evans From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of James W. Wolford Sent: January-30-11 8:28 PM To: NatureNS Subject: [NatureNS] more on Eagle Watch Jan. 29-30, Sheffield Mills ADDENDUM for Jan. 29 (Sat.) Eagle Watch/2011: On Sunday an informant told me that on Saturday the eagles at the north end of Middle Dyke Road, Sheffield Mills, finally decided to go to the ground and feed on the provided chicken carcasses at about 4:30 p.m.!, by which time I'll bet most of the hopeful eagle-watchers and photographers had departed for the day. Usually by that late in the afternoon, many of the eagles would have departed for their communal roosts for the night -- the best-known such spot for the "eagle grapevine" is in the White Rock area in dense trees along the Gaspereau River, and other sites exist along the North Mountain in the Glenmont and Stewart Mountain Road areas, I believe. JAN. 30, 2011 (Sunday) -- 20th Annual EAGLE WATCH I Weekend (cont.) -- Another gorgeous day, and much more Sunny than yesterday: temperatures -10 warmed to -1 C., with very little wind, perfect for standing at Swetnam's field feeding site and waiting for action from the mostly-just-perched dozens of bald eagles. Apparently the eagles did very little during the whole morning, but at about 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. they decided (?) it was time for action, and watchers reported at the hall later that there was excellent action in the air and on the ground with lots of chases etc. involving food items or just for fun? If any of our readers were witnesses to the spectacle, please send us your impressions, and thanks in advance. I didn't get there until 2:30 p.m., by which time there were 60+ bald eagles all perched and doing nothing along the south side of the big field, and quite a few ravens perched near them. No food was left on the ground. Also, regarding other places to see eagles, the eagle feeding site just east of Wolfville (Tebogt's?) where Hwy. 1 intersects Eye and Dyke Roads (one to south, other to north), apparently had about 20+ eagles this morning; so there must be carcasses there now in the mornings adjacent to the silver chicken barn right there. Another feeding site (Lightfoot's) is just back to the west, closer to Wolfville, but back in to the north of Hwy. 1 almost to the railroad and edge of dykelands (sort of visible from north end of Dyke Road). Richard Hennigar's army of volunteers finally got the system of TV and VCR and videotapes working, showing a 30-minute, 15-year-old, "Land and Sea" episode plus a 45-minute film produced at Cape Breton University called "Saving the Bald Eagle" (latter concerning the summer nesting of eagles in Cape Breton and the donation of nestling eagles to the U.S. states of Massachusetts & Connecticut? during the 1980s to help the come-back of the bald eagle in the continental U.S. Next week hopefully the eagle video by Janet & John Foster in about 1996 will also be shown there.
