I have not seen any unusual birds here in Port Hawkesbury this winter but have now accumulated a number of interesting species: The Mockingbird that arrived on January 19 visits our back yard daily to take water from the heated birdbath. It is not interested in the berries and grape jelly that I offer and is obviously feeding somewhere nearby. A Dickcissel showed up today (February 2) with the forty House Sparrows that are always here. First Dickcissel I have seen in two years. Also here on a somewhat regular basis: Downy Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, two Song Sparrows, seven or eight American Tree Sparrows, fifteen Redpolls and one American Robin. A sharp-shinned Hawk also visits on occasion. Several White-throated Sparrows observed in January seem to have moved somewhere else. DWJ. -- David W. Johnston Mary K.
