Index of Subjects Ken: I grew up with "Wilson's Snipe." Then it was decided (OA.O.U.) that it was the same species as the old World Common Snipe, and so they were lumped'with the older species name gallinago chosen by "rule" and the vernacular "Common" going along with it. Tffernces led to them being "split" again - so back to Common (G. gallinago) Wilson's (G. delicata). There are quite a few species pairs that have been treated variously in the past and recently split or re-split - our Black Scoter, Three-toed Woodpecker, Winter Wren, and some may be in the pipe - e.g. Our Whimbrel and the rather different Old-World Whimbrel.
