Hi all
A group of us ( Sandy MacGregor, Charlie Kendell, George Childe and myself) spent about 4 hours today, Jan. 15, 2011, exploring Sober I., HRM on a beautiful winter day. Often gloves were not needed and in the kelp were clouds of kelp flies to keep the Pipits happy! Below is our list of birds seen. The Killdeer were probably
expected for this year with the number that have been reported in the last month along the Atlantic shore. We were a little surprised to see 3 distant Yellowlegs
in the kelp of Fishery Island. They were too far to identify, but possibly Greater as a Killdeer seen after they flew off appeared smaller in height. Shortly after that an accipiter zipped along over that beach area; it seemed too large for a Sharpie, but it was hard to come to a definitive conclusion as were the cormorants sitting on distant offshore island. We had both species seen more clearly elsewhere along the coast, but these were just a little fuzzy to be able to decide for sure.

En route to and from Sober I., we had a group of about 100 Redpolls and a White-winged Crossbill in the Trafalgar area, a Killdeer just east of Sheet Harbour,
12 Hooded Mergansers in East River of Sheet Harbour, another 16 Hooded Mergansers and 5 Common Mergansers at West Quoddy, 11 Great Cormorants
(most supporting nice white flank patches) seen from the wharf off the wharf from Atkins Pt. Rd., 2 Double-crested Cormorants at Port Dufferin and a
Great Horned Owl just inside the south end of the Liscomb Game Sanctuary.
cheers
ken
