DEC. 29 (Wed.), 2010 - WEST HANTS CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT -- Like the
past couple of days, a stiff north wind of 30-50 km/hr made today
quite challenging for us birders, with temperatures from -3 to -1 C.

But my walking of the streets of downtown Windsor and being bundled
up in hooded coat, tuque, good mitts, and snow boots made my part
quite bearable, and my morning was fairly productive, with three
personal highlights: a huge flock of 600+ Bohemian waxwings eating
snow on the ground all around my car (a vocal and colourful treat,
but nobody present with which to share it); a male Eurasian wigeon at
the Windsor sewage ponds (I visited the ponds three times to confirm
it); and a probable male? Baltimore oriole at a feeder near the old
textile factory.

My personal hours and kilometres were as follows: 5 hrs. and 10 km.
on foot; and 1 hr. and 25 km. by car.

Suzanne Borkowski, alone and partly in her monstrous SUV, shared area
4 of Windsor with me. She needed the car because she had a much
larger area of Windsor to cover than I did (mostly downtown for me,
from the textile factory to the streets surrounding Haliburton House
museum).

Here are my own species and numbers for the day, including my three
highlights above:

Canada goose - 54
American black duck - 124
mallard - 8
American wigeon - 25
Eurasian wigeon - 1 male (possibly 2 males, 1 immature??)(not seen well)
bald eagle - 2 adults + 2 immatures = 4 total5
red-tailed hawk -
ring-billed gull - 1
herring gull - 75
great black-backed gull - 26
rock pigeon - 433
mourning dove - 16
northern flicker - 1
downy woodpecker - 1
hairy woodpecker - 2
northern raven - 3
American crow - 30
blue jay - 18
black-capped chickadee - 18
American robin - 4
Bohemian waxwing - 600
European starling - 160
dark-eyed junco - 7
American tree sparrow - 1
song sparrow - 5
Baltimore oriole - 1
American goldfinch - 5
house sparrow - 13

red squirrel - 2 together (but not chasing one another) in same tree
--------------------------
The feeder where the Baltimore oriole was seen is at 390 Nesbitt
Street, very close to the old textile factory north of Hwy. 101 -- at
the main Windsor exit at the Windsor end of the causeway -- drive
north past the tourist bureau and then east and look for the sign for
Nesbitt Street. Park at the corner and walk in just 4 houses on the
factory side of the road -- Glen Burbidge is the home owner, 798-5248
-- I chatted with him, and ***** he should be recruited for next year
as a feeder-watcher for the Count *****.

I was one of about a dozen or more participants who repaired to the
Brooklyn home of Beth and Frank Woolaver again this year -- THANKS
FROM ALL! -- for the post-count warm pot-luck repast and tally after
dark. Our preliminary tally had 49 species for Count Day plus one
more for Count Week (barred owl)(these totals are sure to grow
somewhat with other reports to come), with some selected notes as
follows as I recall them:

Eurasian wigeon - male seen by myself at Windsor sewage ponds
wood duck (Allistons, at Falmouth reservoir)
common merganser seen
northern harrier seen
sharp-shinned hawk seen
rough-legged hawk seen
no notable gulls
American robins seen by several observers
cedar waxwings seen (as well as Bohemians)(some with robins)
PINE WARBLER (Angela Joudrey's seen and photographed by her and also
seen today by compiler Pat Kelly)
northern cardinal -- some seen
chipping sparrow seen
Savannah sparrow seen
snow bunting - at least one seen, at a feeder, I think
Baltimore oriole - seen at feeder in Windsor by myself
white-winged crossbill seen
common redpolls seen by more than one group
no pine siskins reported yet by tally group
evening grosbeaks were seen
--------------------------

TWO MORE CURRENT BIRD REPORTS:

PINE WARBLER IN WOLFVILLE -- Sherman Bleakney has now photographed
his bird, seen off and on since Dec. 16, and lately it has been seen
daily at his suet feeder in his back yard, at the top end (last house
on west side) of Kent Ave., which goes south from Main St., well west
of the Acadia Univ. campus.

RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD -- Martin Thomas has a single female at his
feeder, north of Port Williams, in a subdivision just east of Hwy.
358 and just south of the Canard River dykelands -- the subdivision
used to be appropriately called Canard Acres -- his phone number is
542-4484.
