There are 2 Orioles now that are coming here to=A0my feeders. I had not bee=
n having much luck with the oriole enclosure received from Suzann Myers. Th=
e platform I was using was just too close to the ground and was of great in=
terest to some of the cats living around here so I removed it.=A0I am makin=
g the suet suggested by Suzann but the marauding Starlings just completely =
bullied any and every other bird away and in one day, they are devouring ev=
ery single=A0homemade suet cake, scarfing down almost all the grape jelly &=
eating all the grapes. Was having abit more success getting the mealworms =
to the Orioles as they are early risers and stick around a little longer in=
the later afternoons 4:30 - 4:45pm time frame. However one is a little pig=
and drives the other oriole away every time.
So=A0today, I put out the enclosure again, this time placed higher off the =
ground on an old sawhorse table that was=A0halfway hidden in a corner of my=
basement. I put a bowl of grapes with the=A0ends removed, so if the skin f=
roze, at least they might be able to get the moisture, a bowl of melted sue=
t mixed with grape jelly and a warm water filled Tupperware dish, double to=
pped=A0with 30=A0mealworms.
Lo & behold, the orioles came to it, they both went in, both ate in peace, =
& didn't fight too much & were able to get in and out without much difficul=
ty,=A0and Suzann's right, the bloody Starlings cannot get in!
Other birds of note coming on a daily basis,
1 Red-breasted Nuthatch,=20
2 Hairy Woodpeckers
1 Downy Woodpecker
3 or 4 Dark-eyed Juncos
6 White-throated Sparrows
1 American Goldfinch
7 Mourning Doves
1 Northern Flicker
5 Pigeons
4 Black-capped Chickadees
the occasional sighting of the female Northern Cardinal
noticed 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk out front the other day flying over the houses=
on the other side of the street.
and other fauna
1 Red Squirrel
ugh! 1 Norway Rat that appears to have made his home in the neighbours rock=
 wall.
=A0
Happy New Year to all!
