Hi folks; On the St.Peter's CBC today, Weldon MacPhail had good views of a gull with his scope and would like some help. He is on sympatico and naturens will not accept him. Weldon is a very good birder, especially water birds. Billy He sent me the following description: The gull I had seen today was viewed in ranges from 300 feet to 1/2 a kilometer over a 15 minute period. This bird was B.H gull to R.B. gull size. It had a very light mantle, initially it looked all white but on close range viewing it had black tips that went up the front edge of the wing and brownish carpal bars and a greyish mantle was starting to show through. It was bathing at a close distance where I noticed a solid black belly from it's chest to near vent, not black flecks but solid black, resembling a L.T. duck male on a frontal view. It's underwings were mostly white. It had a white tail with no banding of black but very little traces of black near the tips. The bird had a black bill that was larger than a B.H. gull. It had an auricular spot and a light brown wash from spot to spot across the lower nape with mottled flecks on the head. It appeared to have a strong flight pattern, not lofty. It tried fighting the wind but couldn't and finally retreated to the opposite side on the pond where I couldn't view it any longer. I didn't notice leg color, most of the viewing it was on the water.
