From: John Sollows

Date: Dec. 27/10

While driving along the south end of Water Street in Yarmouth at 3 P.M.in
overcast conditions this afternoon, I noticed a different gull to my east,
flying over some nearby rooftops. Since I was driving, I couldn't stop to
get a "good" look, but what I observed were solid, contrasting black
wingtips from underneath, and dark legs.

Kittiwake? Maybe, but the black on the wingtips in a kittiwake tends to cut
straight across , with the border more or less perpendicular to the rear
edge of the wing, doesn't it? The black border on this bird's seemed to be
at a much more oblique angle, and end more proximally on the forward edge of
the wing. Something like the wingtip pattern on a Sabine's.

That would be exciting, and the winter Sabine's seems to have a white head,
but I did not notice a forked tail, and the gull did not look that small.

Another possibility is a laughing gull, but the contrast between the black
wing tip and the rest of the wing was very pronounced.

The bill did not look especially small, but that's all I can say, from my
vantage point behind the wheel!

Any thoughts?
