Hi Gayle,

As Randy mentioned and your and Darrell's friends have observed, Barred Owls are generalists and will eat fish. They are also opportunists and will take advantage of whatever food source is available and plentiful. This might be birds, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians or, in your friend's case, fish. Much of the research that determined what Barred Owls eat was conducted in Nova Scotia by Mark Elderkin, now a Biologist with DNR, so you can be sure the range of food items I've listed is valid for Nova Scotian Barred Owls. You might suggest to your friend that she/he put netting over the pond to protect the goldfish because it's likely that the owl will continue to exploit the fish while they are available to it.

All the best,

Lance

Subject: EXTERNAL: [NatureNS] Native Owls: Specialists Or Opportunists

My friend in Bridgewater has an ornamental pond stocked with unusual (& expensive!) types of goldfish. Within the last few days a large owl has been seen 'fishing', while perched 'in wait' on the edge of the pond.
I truly thought that owls were strictly meat eaters, not fish eaters (& certainly not birds of prey that 'fished').
Since my friend has no idea of what type of owl this could be, can anyone out there hazard a guess of what type of owl this could be?

Thank you,

Gayle MacLean
Dartmouth
