I've seen YR Warb. use them as food but usualy only in the depths = of winter. Tom K. Canso ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Blake Maybank=20 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca=20 Sent: Thursday, November 25, 2010 1:53 PM Subject: [NatureNS] A Bayberry Mystery When we explored the Advocate area two weeks ago, Kathleen Spicer = showed me how she had placed berry-laden branches of Bayberry in her = garden to attract birds, though few had yet discovered them -- a robin, = the odd chickadee, etc. As there was a huge quantity of Bayberry = growing, almost weed-like, on The Bar of Apple River Harbour, I picked a = half-dozen branches to try at my feeders in White's Lake. I stuck the branches into a half-barrel near the feeders. I was = curious to learn if anything would discover the berries, and how long it = would take. All the berries disappeared that first day. I wasn't expecting such a fast result, and as I quite busy that day I = had not kept an eye on the Bayberry. I do know there were no robins or = waxwings around, or any other obvious berry lover. But I don't know = what ate the berries. My guess is chickadees, but I'm wondering if = anyone else has any Bayberry feeder experience. I haven't found a = local supply of Bayberry to repeat the experiment. Any suggestions regarding the mystery diners?
