NOV. 13, 2010 - digital photo of the Robie Tufts Nature Centre with
a cyclone fence around the pavilion and a shelter erected around the
chimney plus scaffolding in order for the town's contractor to
"repoint" the chimney, i.e. rebuild the outer layer of bricks?

NOV. 14, 2010 - Pat & I walked in the Kentville Ravine, and another
walker there told us he had recently seen a very large owl there on
two separate walks -- probably a great horned owl, from his
description of its wingspan.

About 100 Canada geese at Lakeville's Silver Lake in mid-afternoon.
And we looked a bit at northeast Grand Pre for sandhill cranes, but
none seen. Along the paved road through the Grand Pre dykelands, 2
separate red-tailed hawks perched on the power line and apparently
hunting from there (normal for Grand Pre red-tails for a couple of
years).

NOV. 15, 2010 - Again I searched the dykelands at Grand Pre in early
afternoon, but nothing of note spotted, other than a big flock of 200
+ Am. crows, lots of gulls, and a red-tailed hawk.

BLOMIDON NATURALISTS SOCIETY regular meeting this evening, featuring
the Annual General Meeting (to be finished next month with proposed
changes to BNS By-Laws) and presenter MARTHA JONES, of both Project
UFO (www.ProjectUFO.ca) and Biology Dept. of Univ. of Cape Breton in
Sydney. "UFO" here refers to "unidentified foreign organisms", i.e.
accidental or purposeful introductions of alien organisms into our
ecosytems on land, in fresh water, and in salt water or estuaries
(e.g. green crab along coasts, Japanese skeleton shrimp, rock snot
algae in fresh water, Codium seaweed ("oyster thief" or "dead man's
fingers") in coastal waters, nematodes in swim-bladders of American
eels (Anguillicoloides crassus), tunicates or sea squirts of several
species in salt water, Chinese mitten crab, Asian shore crab,
spinycheek crayfish, bryozoan crusts, Atlantic bay scallop, oyster
microbe parasite MSX (Haplosporidium nelsoni), and many others like
alien lady beetles on land -- see the Web site mentioned above.

Since we got back to Wolfville from our trip to British Columbia
(Nov. 8/10), I have only one cardinal sighting, just once, of a
female. Also sighted near the feeders were 7 female or imm.
pheasants (a family?), a downy woodpecker, up to 6+ blue jays, a few
mourning doves and starlings, 5+ black-capped chickadees, a few white-
throated sparrows, and a junco.

NOV. 18, 2010 - Canard Pond: 6 n. pintails, 15 black ducks, 2 drake
mallards, one flying small unidentified duck, plus about 20 great
black-backed gulls and about 5 herring gulls.

I must remember to look for the Hortonville nearly-all-white red-
tailed hawk, which will have been here for at least 10 winters if it
shows up this winter and lasts until February, 2011.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
