ALL: I am weighing in on the "Acadian" - "Boreal" Chickadee issue, as I was birding when the "official" (AOU) species vernacular was "Brown-capped Chickadee," as in, for example, Taverner's "Birds of Canada." and maybe even in the early "Peterson." The nominate subspecies hudsonicus (the form in s. Québec (where I birded then) was called the "Hudsonian Chickadee" in the vernacular, but we always used the species name "Brown-capped." . Similarly, no one would have called the NS birds "Acadian Chickadees" except when referring to the subspecies. Five subspecies are still recognized, and 4 others not. I don't know why the AOU later chose to name the species "Boreal Chickadee" rather than retaining the older "Brown-capped" or even the vernacular "Hudsonian" of the nominate subspecies. Cheers, Ian Ian McLaren
