After we pinned and fixed the wing..we then started the process to have him sent to a rehab facility in the Florida Keys to finish his rehab as we had him in the winter and couldn't exercise him outside. It took a llooooong time to get the necessary paperwork to have him sent back to the USA. Apparently cattle egrets are of special interest as they are endangered in Ghana ( who knew? ) and as soon as they are endangered anywhere they get special consideration on the CITES list and then things slow down even more. Considering Brown Pelicans were recently a species of concern....it may take a while! Good luck :) Helene Helene Van Doninck DVM Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre RR#1 Brookfield Nova Scotia Canada B0N1C0 hvandoninck@eastlink.ca www.cwrc.net <http://cwrcblog.blogspot.com/> 1-902-893-0253 -----Original Message----- From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca]On Behalf Of Tuma Young Sent: Tuesday, October 19, 2010 10:21 PM To: NatureNS Subject: [NatureNS] Ralph the Brown Pelican Kwe Msit Wen (Greetings All) Couple days ago, Nick and I ran into Mike King (?) at the beach by Hartlen Point. In our discussion (while trying to find the Soras), Mike asked if we heard anything about the Brown Pelican that was taken to Hope for Wildlife. Nick and I volunteer there. I told him that I would find out and give everyone an update on "Ralph" (named after the strip bar where he was rescued from). Speaking to Allison at Hope for Wildlife, Ralph, the Pelican is still there. Hope has received the necessary export permits from the Canadian Government for the Pelican but is still waiting for the import permits from the US government. Once she has received this, arrangement are in place to have Ralph transported to a rehab that specializes in pelicans. There was a bit of a learning curve with Ralph. Apparently, Pelicans also obtain their water intake from when they scoop for fish but the volunteers were feeding him fish but he was not drinking. They were very concerned about dehydration and, after a bit of research, were able to figure out a way for Ralph to feed and to drink. Ralph is doing well and will be taken down south as soon as the import permit arrive. Tuma and Nick Halifax, NS Koqwaqja'tekaq'tinej.
