While birding the Eastern Shore today with a couple from Washington State, =
we saw what looked like a Yellowlegs (I would have said Greater because of =
the long bill) except for the fact that it was swimming - often in little c=
ircles - darting and jabbing as it fed from the surface of the water - just=
like a Phalarope!
After studying several guides: Sibley, Nat Geo, Peterson's, we all agreed i=
t looked like a Wilsons Phalarope.
The West Lawrencetown Marsh is acessed by turning right (if you're coming f=
rom Dartmouth) off Hwy #207 just before Conrod's Beach. About half a km dow=
n this road there's a small parking lot by the saltmarsh trail. Walk left (=
East) on this trail, across the road from the parking lot, for about 100 me=
ters or until you can see the water clearly.
We saw the bird around 11:00 am.
Other sightings today included a White-rumped Sandpiper on the marsh side, =
sandy shore area, right at the end of the road. Also two Dunlin in the same=
spot. A juvenile White-crowned Sparrow was at Bissett Lake in the bushes b=
etween the parking lot and the beach; and a pair of Northern Cardinals were=
seen along the trail by the bridge at Bissett Lake.
