The NS Mycology Society Mushroom Foray at White Point this weekend was a great success. The weather co-operated and so did the fungii. Catherine Ross took pictures for the website: http://www.nsmushrooms.org/about/ There was one Laughing Gull at the W.P.Golf Course, and one Laughing Gull beside one Herring Gull at Summerville beach. By the picnic parking lot there was a fly in of warblers which joined with the 15-20 Yellow-rumped Warblers. A female Chesnut sided was the first one to land. followed by a Palm ( not sure if western race or not, as they were very active in the wind. Also Song Sparrows, Juncos in the mix. One Greater Yellowlegs flew over. Wood Ducks were the highlight at the DU/Municipality Meadow Pond in Liverpool. There were 6 Wood Ducks (2 very near the road) by the Harley Umprey Road with 2 Black Ducks. Behind the old Michelin building there were 14 Mallards and 2 Wood Ducks. At the Superstore, nine Laughing Gulls were still present. One with white tail spots seemed smaller than the rest. ( Pat McKay and I had noticed this a couple of weeks ago. I did consider Franklin's, but concluded it was just a small individual.) Cherry Hill Pond there was a Ring-necked Duck swimming about near the lilies and weeds. I believe it was injured. Going along the beach road at Green Bay, there were many ( 50+-) D-C Cormorants on rocks with 2 Black-backed Gulls. 100+- Starlings were on the wires, and a Belted Kingfisher was on the wharf. 2 Common Eider and 6 Mallards were near by. When I reached home in Halifax there were several nice mushrooms on the lawn in front of my apt.( Agaricus campestris - I forget the new species name for the NS ones). I made a delicious soup.
