Whilst doing a bird survey yesterday near Loganville (very western edge of Pictou county), I came across two flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS. These are the first I've seen at close range in the woods in central NS since the fall of 2007. One flock had eight birds, while the second had 20. They were very curious about my mobbing CD, and came within a couple meters while checking it out. Last fall, while carrying out a similar survey at nearby Nuttby Mountain, Stuart Tingley reported the first (8) Evening Grosbeaks on Sept. 22nd , so the last week of the month seems to be first fall arrival time. I wonder if these birds are coming out of Newfoundland, Cape Breton and/or eastern Nova Scotia, as there have been no fall reports as yet to the west in New Brunswick or Maine.
