Kwe Msit Wen:

First of all, I wish to thank everyone for chiming in with some thoughts on
which hawk is the Toad Hawk. I learned a lot about snakes! Perhaps it will be
an another photo project for me to embark on, photographing snakes and finding
Mi'kmaq names for them. However, I wanted a name for the Toad Hawk-the votes
are in and Northern Harrier seems to fit the bill. I did check once more with
McAtee, Folk Names of Canadian Birds but could not find a listing for Northern
Harrier. Then I remember that one of you mentioned that the Northern Harrier
seems to be around marshes so I checked the "All About Birds" website by the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology and it stated that another name for Northern Harrier
was Marsh Hawk. I went back to McAtee, found Marsh Hawk and in NS, one of the
folk names was, wait for it........."Toad Hawk."!

I went back to the Micmac Grammer, transcribed it to contemporary orthography
and the Mi'kmaq name for Northern Harrier is: Mtaqu'a'kejit (meaning killer of
black snakes).

The easy stuff is done-now for the hard part-trying to get a good photograph of
it.

Wela'li'oq Msit Wen
(Thank You to All)
