SEPT. 19, 2010 - The CARCNET (Canadian Amphibians and Reptiles
Conservation Network) meetings of Sept. 17-20 have just disbanded
late this afternoon, and what remains is a field trip by bus from
Wolfville to Kejimkujik Nat. Park for all day tomorrow. The two days
of mostly student research presentations were very interesting and
wide-ranging, all the way to using conservation canines (trained
dogs) for sniffing out turtles, snakes, etc. and following their
"tracks". And thanks to Fred Schueler for calling our (and my)
attention to these meetings (no publicity seen anywhere in Wolfville
nor in Acadia Univ. Biol. Dept.!!) and to his reports on the
meetings. I was privileged to meet Fred and his partner, Aleta
Karstad, during the meetings -- http://fragileinheritance.org and
http://karstaddailypaintings.blogspot.com .

As Fred has alerted us, he and Aleta are giving a public presentation
this Wednesday evening at 7:30 at the N.S. Museum of Nat. History,
entitled "30 YEARS LATER EXPEDITION", a transCanada Biological
Survey, launched in March 2010 in partnership with the Canadian
Museum of Nature in celebration of the International Year of
Biodiversity. This presentation is free and open to all.

The following is on Fred's Web site (above):

30 Years Later EXPEDITION

What do we know?
Where are we going?
What can we find out?
Who can be involved?

Biologist/artist team Fred Schueler and Aleta Karstad revisit the
landscapes they have traveled over the past 20 to 40 years, checking
the condition of ecological communities and populations of plants and
animals, some of them now Species At Risk. Aleta will paint and draw
enroute as Fred adds valuable new data to historical records, in a
database partnership with the Canadian Museum of Nature. Building on
a database of over 86,000 records, this is a rare long term study in
an age of short term projects.

30 Years Later welcomes contributions from amateur naturalists and
scientists, to suggest and add to our itinerary of revisits across
Canada - an important baseline for the study of ecology and the
environment.

What do we know?
Where are we going?
What can we find out?
Who can be involved?

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
