--Boundary_(ID_wqzTTbo58JIjo/WW5duu5Q) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT SEPT. 20, 2010 - Two interesting things in our back yard: (a) a newly gorgeous cock pheasant was with a female, who has been seen just the last few days, and he was actively pursuing and courting her, just like male pigeons do under the influence of testosterone -- she acted totally disinterested and probably wanted to tell him something like, "get lost, you idiot, it's not that time of year!!"; and (b) besides a visit from a female hairy woodpecker, an orange-and-brown juvenile male cardinal was at the feeders -- and now I think our yard area has TWO different orange male cardinals, i.e. this one that shows a lot of brown (roughly half bright orange and half brown, with a darkish beak), vs. one that has much more orange, much less brown, and a colourful pink/orange beak ("adult"). So now I wonder re cardinals whether we have a single "brood" + parents of a male, female (one extra adult female has been seen once), and 4 young-of-the-year (2 drab females + the 2 orange males)(but more probably, if those males are juveniles of this year, one is from a somewhat earlier brood?). And still I haven't tried to find an account of orange plumages in the literature on cardinals. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville Jim (James W.)
