All:

I have just placed a combo quartet of images of the godwit found and
photo'd by Robert Turner 18 Sept. at Louis Head Bch, Queens. The first
three images that I received showed its extraordinarly long, slightly
drooped bill (normally shorter and more upturned in Hudsonian, longer
and straighter in Black-tailed). Furthermore, the two flight shots (2,
3) sent initially seemed to indicate pale underwings (shadowed in
image 3, but suggesting tip of white underwing covverts). Hence my
initial alert. However, note thate rather restricted white wingstrioe,
which more conspicuous in Black-tailed. Robert later sent image 4 that
clearly shows the black underwing coverts of Hudsonian Godwit.
Disappointing perhaps, but a useful lesson.

Cheers, Ian

Ian McLaren
