In more than 40 years at sea and hundreds, if not thousands, of Orcas, I
have seen them take seals and sea lions but only once attack a whale and
that was also off Newfoundland in 1963. We were heading from St Anthony for the
Labrador coast with the Lt Gov aboard. I had the forenoon watch and saw a
great commotion ahead together with an enormous area of blood. Several
Orcas were tearing into a whale. It was much bigger than a Minke, possibly a
hump or fin back. A frigate passing a few hundred yards away did not seem to
deter them.

The Orcas were seen off TORS Cove (not Georges) in the Witless Bay
Ecological Reserve. We were fortunate to see the pod the next morning. As I can't
post to NatureNS (and you can) perhaps you could correct the place.
