Friday I captured and photographed a metallic boring beetle Buprestis maculiventris Say. The beetle landed on me while I was watching a neighbor's driveway as it was being resurfaced with hot macadam in Seabright. Beetles of this group are attracted by turpentine and smoke from burning wood, and I couldn't help wondering if some of the fumes from the road project had similarly attracted this specimen.
