Hi Eric and others, The last peak year for Red-breasted Nuthatch numbers in Nova Scotia during the fall was 2005. We are overdue for the population cycle of this irruptive species to hit a high note. Perhaps the size and earliness of this group on Brier indicates that this will be a bumper year for the species in the province. We'll certainly know more by the end of this month when an irruption of Red-breasted Nuthatches should be quite evident. All the best, Lance ==================== Lance Laviolette Glen Robertson, Ont. ==================== -----Original Message----- From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Eric Mills Sent: Monday, August 02, 2010 4:21 PM To: Nature NS Subject: EXTERNAL: [NatureNS] R-br. Nuthatches, Brier Island This morning a group of 35+ Red-breasted Nuthatches was at Northern Point, Brier Island, at dawn. Many of them soon flew off to the NE, as fall migrants often do. This is 2-3 weeks earlier than my previous late summer records. The only other obvious migrant was an adult Ovenbird in the end thickets at the point.
