  To conclude this subject, I have just received a follow-up email from 
Dave McCorqudale:

Denis Doucet, dragonfly expert, responded:
As I am sure you have guessed, this is an exuvia;), which would explain
its not moving... Indeed, it is of one of the Darners (family
Aeshnidae).
(Denis is working on an illustrated key to dragonfly exuviae for this
region.)

In the meantime my 'exuvia' is still gamely hanging on to the iris blade and still looking round and plump - but, today, definitely looking a little smaller and slightly darker in colour...

Most interesting indeed, and my thanks to Dave for this.
