--Boundary_(ID_AklCmz316xhEfS33uj/9oQ) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT JULY 8, 2010 - Andy Dean's journal and photos for today in Kentville included 3 photos of 2 gorgeous hot-pink Primrose Moths (Schinia florida) in the centre an evening primrose flower. JULY 10, 2010 - On CBC Radio News this morning, it was reported that a young beluga whale is in the Alma area of New Brunswick in the Bay of Fundy, and has been there for 2 or 3 weeks? A woman there had gone swimming and diving and found the beluga to be very unwary and interested in her while she was in the water. JULY 12, 2010 - Ken Cheslock of Medford (ne. of Canning) reports that rose-breasted grosbeaks have brought their fledglings to his feeder recently. Also there is a single well-fledged young cardinal with a blackish beak in his neighborhood, and this is a new addition to the bird fauna there. I checked the bald eagle nest north of Kentville in the Eagle Landing subdivision, and both fledglings were still on/in the nest. One of the youngsters is much larger than the other, and my guess would be that the small one is a male and large one a female. Richard Stern has been checking them every day and has lots of photos. Gesner's Pond held a belted kingfisher, a great blue heron, and 3 brown mallards. JULY 13, 2010 - I reported a single fully-fledged young cardinal at my feeders on July 6, but then I didn't see any more young cardinals until today. In early afternoon there were at least 2 cardinals at the feeders. One was a fully-fledged young male, and I didn't see the other one well enough to tell age or sex. The body of the young male was flecked with orange, so that it was much more colourful than a female of any age.
