Hi Everyone:

Nick and I are back in the province (trip down to southern US, Southwest US, Ont, Quebec and Bonaventure Island for the Northern Gannets). Pictures will be posted later.

However, I was speaking to a couple of Elder and that they were wondering what the English name for a particular butterfly was.

The elders stated that it was called "Misimijqanaw" and that the pattern was that of a deck of cards (the elders in Listuguj stated that it was like the Jack, Queen and the King). My mother stated that it had the "Ace of Spades" pattern on the wings. The Micmac dictionary states that it is a butterfly with the Ace of Spades pattern.

Everyone said that it was a considered rare to see this butterfly and that it was very good luck to see it. They all stated that this butterfly usually is seen when gathering Maliqwanj (hazelnuts-Corylus cornuta).

Any thoughts on the identification will be appreciated.
